Commuting, Part 2

Published by AnksConsulting LLC under blog

A couple of days ago, I posted about my daily commute. Now, I’ve got update what I said there. It seems that every week or so, the Long Island Rail Road is having problems. Today, there were signal problems on the Babylon line, not the line I need to take. Despite the problems being on a completely different line, it took my train an extra 30 minutes to get to Hicksville. The signal problems caused congestion at Jamaica (a major hub), which resulted my train going very, very slow until we passed Jamaica.

I’ve got to find a place in the city.

Commuting…

Published by AnksConsulting LLC under blog

So, I’m working in the city, but to save money, I’m commuting from Long Island. Each day, I take the Long Island Rail Road from Hicksville to Penn Station, and then take a subway to 42nd street, finally reaching my building on 44th. Each day, this trip takes a total of 1.5 hours each way, door to door time. As I was coming back home the other day, I got to thinking, how much am I really spending commuting?

It takes me 1.5 hours each way; that is 3 hours in one day. During a five day work week, that becomes 15 hours during the week (3 x 5). During the course of an year, there are 52 weeks, but I’ve got vacation time of 14 days, so lets reduce the 52 weeks by 3 weeks, leaving us 49 weeks of work during a year. 49 weeks times 15 hours a week, is 735 hours. In the course of a year, I’ll spend 735 hours commuting!

Even if I’m in the city, I’ll still have a commute, but it will be no where near the same amount as it currently is; I hope. As a result, I’m looking for places to move into, hopefully, if the housing market continues as it is currently, I’ll be able to afford a condo that I can buy.

As a side note, 20 days left :-).

Review: Hawaiian Tropic Zone

Published by AnksConsulting LLC under blog

I went to the Hawaiian Tropic Zone for lunch with a friend the other day, and this place is wonderful. Think of it as a higher class Hooters with the girls in bikinis. Now, the girls in bikinis isn’t the only reason to go, the food there is good. We were there for lunch, had the prix-fixed menu for $20 each, and it was well worth it. The beer is a tad expensive, but since the restaurant is in Times Square, I guess it makes up for it.

Overall, the food is good, a little pricey due to the location, the waitress is awesome, and the atmosphere is great. Definitely check it out if you are in the area.

Blocking Facebook Flyers

Published by AnksConsulting LLC under blog

If you’re like me, you hate seeing ads on websites. (I’m sorry about the Yahoo ads here, but I need to make some money, if you block them, it is fine by me.) Facebook has its own fair share of ads, while not as bad as some other sites, they are nonetheless annoying at times. With FireFox it is fairly simple to get rid of most of the ads,
simply install AdBlock Plus. But what about the Flyers? Adblock will not be able to get rid of that.

To remove the Facebook Flyers follow these steps:

  1. In Windows Explorer, go to your profile:

    • On Windows Vista/XP/2000, the path is usually %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\, where xxxxxxxx is a random string of 8 characters. Just browse to C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ on Windows XP/2000 or C:\users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ on Windows Vista, and the rest should be obvious.
    • On Windows 95/98/Me, the path is usually C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\
    • On Linux, the path is usually ~/.mozilla/firefox/xxxxxxxx.default/
    • On Mac OS X, the path is usually ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/xxxxxxxx.default/
  2. Go to the Profiles folder that you see.
  3. Create a new file called: “UserContent.css”
  4. Add the following to the bottom of the file, and restart FireFox.
  5. /* — facebook — */
    /* block ads (Firefox only) */
    @-moz-document domain(facebook.com) {
    }
    #ssponsor {display: none !important; }

And that is it, Facebook Flyers will no longer show up!

Chocolate

Published by AnksConsulting LLC under blog

A new lunch place opened up recently very close to where I work; in fact it is in the same building as my office, just on the ground floor. The name is Free Foods and while it is not cheap, the food there is good. They have this chocolate brick which is excellent. It’s not really called a chocolate brick, but it looks like a brick and I have no idea what the real name of it is. It has a nice hard-ish outside, essentially a thin crust. But the inside is soft, warm gooey chocolate. Amazing stuff; and I highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys chocolate.
